The first woman Commandant of Prison Staff Training College, Wanini Kireri Senior Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (SACGP) was laid to rest at her home in Daiga in Nanyuki on 9th June 2022.

These is after a short illness where it took her life on 31st May, 2022 at a hospital while undergoing treatment.

During her funeral, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government Dr. Fred Matiang’i directed a building at PSTC, be named after Madam Kireri to honor her.

In President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tribute read by the CS, he described her as an epitome of hard work.


“We have lost a Kenyan who has been a role model especially to women,” the president tribute was read.

The president said she has left a mark both physical and emotional.

The impact she has had in the correctional facilities among them, facilitating of children accompanying their mothers in prison which she introduced were exceptional and very considerate.

CS Matiang’i has described her as a hardworking woman who had a level of honesty and she delivered the best in her duties at the Kenya Prisons Service.

“I want the world to know that we have lost one of our best officers,” the CS said. Among people present in her burial were Ministry of Interior and Coordination of

National Government Chief  Administrative Secretary Winnie Guchu, Principal

Secretary, State Department for Correctional Services Safina Kwekwe, Commissioner General of Prisons John Warioba among others.

Madam Kireri was accorded a military burial where thousands of mourners congregated to give her last respects.

She has left behind a son, Ian Kireri and a daughter-in-law Jackie Kireri among other family members who really cherished her.
