The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) was awarded The Best Government Social Functions Stand during The Nairobi International Trade Fair on the 28th September 2022.

The event was graced by Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua who presented the awards to the winners.

Speaking during the event, the Deputy President praised how much agriculture has contributed to development of the country.

“Agriculture remains the backbone for industrial development, income generation and provision of raw materials for manufacturing,” he said.

Receiving the awards was the Commissioner General of Prisons Brg (Rtd) John Warioba who also received trophies for 2nd place The Most Striking Display (Demonstration of locally Manufactured Products) and also 3rd place, The Stand that best Interprets Current Show Theme (Government stand).

 

The theme for the trade fair is Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade, KPS in boosting agriculture in the country displayed farming activities. Some of the farm products displayed included Rice, millet, wheat, Macadamia, Coffee and vegetables among others which are grown in the different correctional facilities around the country by the inmates.

Other displays by KPS during the trade fair include bottled mineral water which is treated at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru through a water treatment plant where they purify water from the Makuyu river and package it with a brand name, ‘priaqua.’

Also on display are bead work, embroidery, metal work, furniture, hairdressing, leather products and many others which are also made at the different correctional facilities made by inmates with the help of the prison officers.

KPS also displayed several trophies won in sports including athletics, volleyball, netball, boxing, football, darts, judo, wrestling, karate, rugby, weightlifting and taekwondo.
