The State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Hon. Safina Kwekwe visited the Nakuru Girls Probation Hostel and encouraged the girls to be role models once they are reintegrated into society.

The Nakuru hostel at the moment accommodates young offenders from the age of 13-22 years for a period not exceeding one year and an extension is given upon a court order.

There are six probation hostels in the country which are :-

  • Shanzu Boys Probation Hostel in Mombasa which accommodates juveniles below 17 years of age
  • Nairobi Probation Hostel for males who are 17 years and above
  • Kimumu Junior Boys Probation Hostel in Eldoret for males under 17 years
  • Kimumu Senior Boys Probation Hostel in Eldoret for males who are 17 years and above
  • Siaya Probation Hostel for females with special needs both girls and women
  • Nakuru Girls Probation Hostels for females

 

All these probation hostels provide temporary accommodation non-custodial offenders.

During her visit on 27th October 2022 at the Nakuru Girls Probation Hostels, the PS asked the girls to be ambassadors as they leave the facility once they have been reintegrated.

“Make this a moment of reflection so that when you go back home, you become part of the solution,” she advised the girls.

In the facility, the girls are trained in tailoring, beauty, and cookery which are then examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) after completion of the courses.

They also undergo through formal education and some are currently awaiting their examination.

“Those who are going to do their exams this year, I wish you all the best,” the PS addressed the girls.

She also encouraged them to use their talents which will be helpful in their reformation and will also help in improving of their skills for the purposes of doing something constructive for their own lives.
