PS Correctional Ms. Mary Muthoni chairs the 9th steering committee meeting on the Swedish -Kenya Cooperation Program

The Principal Secretary State Department for Correctional Services, Madam Mary Muthoni,HSC chaired the 9th Steering Committee meeting for "Strengthening Prison and Probation practices in Kenya"that is implemented by the Swedish Prison and Probation Services and funded by Swedish International Cooperation Development Agency at Safari Park Hotel,Nairobi on 8th December 2022.

It's deliberations revolved around the activities that were implemented in the last phase of the programme from June -December,2022,Budget and on the sustainability progress as the programme comes to an end.

The PS in her speech said the project has indeed achieved positive outcomes with officers having an opportunity to be trained in Risk, Need and Resposivity (RNR), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dynamic Security (DS) and Change Intervention Program for Probation Officers (CHIPP).

"Through this trainings, the project attained significant impact in correctional practices as demonstrated by improved assessment, efficient placement practices and enhanced individual-based sentence planning," she said.


Also present for the meeting were the Commissioner General of Prisons Brig(Rtd) John K.Warioba,EBS Head of International Affairs-SPPS Mr.Martin Gillä,Hanna Carlsson-1st Secretary Swedish Embassy meeting,Project Manager Mr.Ahsang Sarang -SPPS, Secretary Probation and Aftercare Services Mrs.Mary Mbau,HSC and the Project Management team from Prisons and Probation Services


Thereafter the Commissioner General of Prisons accompanied by Directors joined the Principal Secretary in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service ( SPPS) end of Project Ceremony.

The project was birthed in 2015 through a bilateral Cooperation between Kenya and Sweden.The Commissioner General during his Speech noted that Prison officers have benefited from the assistance in Capacity development through trainings in various areas imparted on them and also gave assurrance of continued guidance on sustainability of the progress of the programs.He also appreciated the Swedish teams and opened his doors on future engagements.

The officers who played a major role during implementaton of the project were recognised for their efforts and the officers trained as TOTs were awarded with Certificates.

The Swedish team handed over all training manuals and tools to the state department for Correctional Services to aid in continuity and sustatainability progress of the program that the project has seen officers trained.

This will see the Service achieve better assessments, efficient placement practices and enhanced individual-based sentence planning thus have an overall improved service delivery.
