Kenya Prison Directors and Prisons Regional Commanders had a meeting with the State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni on 10th March 2023 at the Prisons Staff Training Collage, Ruiru.

The meeting was to bring forth achievements made in the different field stations across the country and to discuss measure to mitigate on challenges faced.

In her address, the PS insisted on working in collaboration and team work as a way of becoming successful.

 

“Let us all join hands and speak with one voice. Let us work together to deliver,” she said.

She emphasized on using available resources to solve needs that are crucial, ensuring that this resources do not go to waste.

“We have arable land so let us make use of that,” she said.

She also emphasized on the need of having strategic partnerships which will see the State Departments grow to greater heights.

Among the achievements discussed in the meeting included:

  • Availability of a rice milling plant at Mwea GK Prison which has seen distribution of rice to the different correctional facilities.
  • A maize milling plant at Naivasha Prison which will be commissioned soon
  • Increase in staff promotions
  • Increase in afforestation in different correctional facilities
  • Soon to be completed septic tank in Kwale Prison
  • Water pump in Hindi Prison, Lamu County awaiting commissioning
  • Existence of virtual courts in some of the correctional facilities which cut on cost of transportation and fuel
  • Outstanding performance in sports in some of the facilities
  • Cultivation of some of the prison farms awaiting plantation

The PS encouraged them to work towards solving problems and getting solutions to problems with the resources available.

She also assured them of constant meetings which will help in acknowledging the work done and knowing the loopholes so that they can be solved.
