The State Department for Correctional Services, within the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, is set to launch an ambitious campaign dubbed ‘one prisoner, one bed, one mattress ‘countrywide to improve the conditions in prisons.

The department on Wednesday issued an appeal for 60,000 beds and mattresses to support the campaign.

Ministry of Interior-State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki HSC said the campaign will seek to recalibrate the department’s operations to an institution that reforms inmates.

Kenya Prison Directors and Prisons Regional Commanders had a meeting with the State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni on 10th March 2023 at the Prisons Staff Training Collage, Ruiru.

The meeting was to bring forth achievements made in the different field stations across the country and to discuss measure to mitigate on challenges faced.

In her address, the PS insisted on working in collaboration and team work as a way of becoming successful.

Her Excellency the First Lady Rachel Ruto joined women at the Langat Women Maximum Prison to celebrate International Women’s Day where she was received by the Correctional Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni.

The day also marked the relaunch of Carakana program which was meant to empower marginalized women in the society.

The program had been introduced in Langata Women’s Prison on 19th December 2016 and since the it has helped in instilling the offenders with skills in cross-stitching.

The program was then cascaded to other four prisons including Nakuru, Shimo la Tewa, Kakamega and Kitale.

The Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Ms. Mary Muthoni Muriuki, HSC has raised concern over the increasing number of children living in prisons with their mothers who instead are supposed to be living a normal life like any other child.

Addressing journalists at Eldoret GK Prison on 16th February 2023, Madam Mary said the children lack proper parenting, are prone to diseases, and mix with adults at a tender age which might lead to behavior change.
