The State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Ms. Mary Muthoni Muriuki accompanied the Ministry of Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki in a familiarization visit to the Mwea G.K Prison on 8th May 2023.
The aim was to familiarize with the facility and check on its conditions so that the challenges can be identified and included in the prison reforms agenda to improve the conditions of prisons.
The changes are expected to influence inmates to voluntarily self-transform by treating them in a humane way.

The PS State Department for Correctional Services Mary Muthoni on 3rd May 2023 did an official visit to the Naivasha GK Maximum Security Prison whereby she hosted members of Citizen United for the Rehabilitation of Errants (CURE) organization in a bid to increase partnerships so as to restore dignity in the correctional facilities.
In support of the initiative of the ‘One prisoner, one bed, one mattress’ initiative by the State Department, CURE donated 2000 mattresses and 600 blankets to the institution.
While addressing the inmates after a brief tour of the facility, the PS urged the prisoners to take up vocational training offered so as to gain skills that will help them after they are released.

State Department for Correctional Services Madam Mary Muthoni Muriuki, HSC, conducted a media briefing on the Transformations at the State Department since she came into office.
In the media briefing on 2nd May 2023, she pointed out eight key priority areas that the State Department through her leadership has put emphasis on and made progress.
The areas include Decongesting of prisons, Climate change, Capacity building, Partnership building, Prison Enterprise modernization, Rehabilitation and Reintegration, offenders and children welfare enhancement and Legal and policy framework support.

H.E The President, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, CGH presided over the 26th prisons pass-out parade of cadet officers at the Prisons Staff Training College, Ruiru on 24th April 2023.
Present was the Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, the CS Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki EGH, CS Defence Hon. Aden Duale, EGH, Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Mary Muthoni Muriuki, HSC, Commissioner General of Prisons Brg (Rtd) John Warioba, EGH among other Senior Government Officers.

At the facility on 19th April 2023, the State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Ms. Mary Muthoni Muriuri, HSC urged the inmates and the prison officers in the facility to ensure they take into serious consideration their personal hygiene and ensure that the environment is clean.
While addressing the inmates, she urged them to wash their hands regularly so as to help in containing the disease.
“Let’s take care of our personal hygiene and let us all ensure that we wash our hands with soap and water on a regular basis,” she said.
Some of the safety measures undertaken in the facility to ensure the disease doesn't spread further include disinfecting, regular testing, decongesting the facility, availability of isolation wards and sensitization about the disease.
