Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco was on Wednesday at the Prison Staff Training College in Ruiru to assess the ongoing training of recruits who joined the college in May this year.
Addressing the trainees, the PS applauded instructors at the institution for their efforts in transforming those under their care into disciplined, principled, and highly skilled professionals even as she urged the trainees to uphold the highest standards of discipline.
“Stand tall, remain disciplined, and keep your eyes on the goal. Your journey has begun, and the future is wide open. Training is the cornerstone of a capable and humane correctional service. A system is only as effective as the officers who serve within it.” She implored.
She said the nine-month programme for constables and the thirteen-month programme for cadets go far beyond physical drills and routine procedures but are deliberately designed to prepare the trainees for the complex, evolving realities of modern correctional work.
“Contemporary correctional work demands proficiency in conflict management, crisis intervention, mental health awareness, and legal and ethical responsibilities. These are not optional skills.” She said.
While lauding the trainees for discipline and general conduct during their time at the institution, Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons in charge of Administration Nicholas Maswai said the recruits are undergoing training that will ensure they are fully equipped to meet current challenges and the demands of the future.
According to Prisons Staff Training College Commandant Angus Masoro, the trainees undergo a comprehensive training program that combines classroom instruction and practical experience to prepare them for the role.
The trainees, under the 2025-2026 programme, have undergone both classroom and field-based instructions with the curriculum covering various areas including legal and security procedures, conflict resolution, prisoner rehabilitation and financial literacy with their graduation set for early next year.
