CORRECTIONAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT INTEGRATES FINANCIAL LITERACY IN ITS REFORM AGENDA
By Nicholas Kigondu
Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco says the department has prioritized financial literacy in its reform agenda as part of improving mental health and wellness.
Speaking during a meeting with officials from the State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) who had paid her a courtesy call, the PS said the programme is targeting both staff and inmates with the realization that fostering a culture of financial prudence could reduce recidivism and address mental health challenges stemming from poor financial management.
According to the PS, there is a correlation between money and crime adding that lack of basic financial skills among those employed leaves them vulnerable to financial shocks.
While expressing his organization’s commitment to support the department in the plan, SBM Bank Kenya Chief Executive Officer Bhartesh Shah said the bank has already initiated programmes within the correctional space meant to empower beneficiaries with knowledge that can transform them and their communities.
