Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco says the department is leveraging on partnerships to enhance efficiency and capacity across all correctional facilities.

Speaking during a meeting with representatives of Close the Gap and Tech Kids Africa organizations, the PS said such partnerships will positively impact the welfare of offenders and ensure a more effective and rehabilitative criminal justice system.

Citing the digital literacy training programme at the Shimo la Tewa borstal Institution, that has been supported by the two organizations, the PS said the training on coding and robotics offered in the programme has equipped the young offenders with invaluable technical skills besides enhancing their digital literacy.

“This is the goal. Engaging in projects that are impactful and life changing and which ultimately transform the lives of the offenders.” Observed the PS.

While seeking more support on training of both staff, teachers and offenders including on registration fees for National Industrial Training Authority examinations, the PS said the partnership with the two organizations remain critical in the ongoing reforms targeting the country’s correctional system.

According to Close the Gap founder Olivier Vanden Eynde, his organization remains committed to supporting the state department in its endeavor by bridging the digital divide and unlocking the potential of offenders especially children in conflict with the law.
