CORRECTIONAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT FETES OFFICERS FOR EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE

It was it was pomp and splendour as the State Department for Correctional Services awarded its best performers in a gala dinner for their exemplary performance in rehabilitating, reforming and safely reintegrating offenders back into society.
While lauding the efforts of those working in correctional systems, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano underscored the need to ensure that mental wellness is placed at the core of the country’s efforts to reform its correctional services.
Miano said Correctional services, by their nature, are interconnected with other social systems adding that it was only through collaborative efforts that the country can create sustainable, long-term improvements in mental health care.
“When we prioritize mental health, we invest in the potential for genuine rehabilitation, emotional recovery, and the rebuilding of lives,” she said.
Speaking at the same forum Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco said the awards are not only meant to acknowledge past achievements, but are equally designed to serve as a source of encouragement to continue striving for excellence.
She urged those working at the department to observe high standards as the it strives to become a centre of excellence both regionally and internationally.
The awards included trophies, cash prizes, and certificates with the addition of fire extinguishers with best correctional institutions set to be painted courtesy of development partners.
At least ten Principal Secretaries attended the award gala night.
The gala night was the climax of the three-day Correctional Service Week which kicked off on Tuesday under the theme “Mental health and wellness for effective Service delivery” which highlighted on the importance of mental health in the context of correctional services.
