JOY AS INMATES AT RUIRU GK PRISON ARE TREATED TO EARLY CHRISTMAS
By Martha Munyambu
It was a moment to savor for inmates and staff at the State Department for Correctional Services as they joined Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco for the Christmas comfort celebrations at the Ruiru GK prison.
During the celebrations, the Principal Secretary lauded staff for their efforts in notable achievements realized over the past one year saying it was a reflection of their commitment to transform the department through efficient service delivery for the common good.
“It is about striking the right balance and always remembering that change is possible. I also wish to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to all our partners and stakeholders who have supported Correctional Services throughout the year. Your contributions have been invaluable.” Said the PS.
According to the PS, the recent graduation of 11 serving inmates with law degrees, and the graduation of a former inmate with a degree in medicine and surgery, was a demonstration that the department's focus on empowering and equipping offenders through education was bearing fruits.
To ensure the reality of progressive laws, the PS said a technical committee is already working on reviewing all laws and policies related to correctional services in an effort to improve efficiency and make the service a beacon of hope in Africa.
This even as she urged Kenyans to support the vulnerable during the festive season.
“Christmas is also a time for giving—both in action and in spirit. It is a reminder for all of us to offer support to those less fortunate, to show compassion to the vulnerable, and to embody the values of empathy and kindness. In our line of work, empathy and compassion are just as vital as discipline and firmness.” She observed.
During the celebrations, the PS distributed mattresses, boxers for all inmates, sodas, loaves of bread and a Christmas cake with the PS taking the time to serve the inmates with a delicious Christmas lunch.
