Efforts to provide incarcerated offenders with critical skills to help in their reintegration back into the society received a boost with the launch of the online chess for freedom championship in Kenya.
The championship, which was launched at the Nairobi West prison on Wednesday by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco, will be used as a tool for education and social inclusion across the country’s correctional facilities.
The championship will culminate with the 4th (the International Chess Federation) FIDE Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners, to be held from 08-10 October 2024 as part of the Chess for Freedom program and a continuation of the international championships among prisoners which was first held in 2019.
According to the PS, the state department chose to launch the championship to expand the scope of sports within prisons, showcase the talent among those in correctional facilities and inculcate a culture of patience among those undergoing rehabilitation.
“It will be the first time the country will be participating in the international tournament where 31 countries will be represented. Playing chess has helped improve inmates in the areas of relationship building, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and accepting responsibility.” Observed the PS.
She said both inmates and prison officers as well as probation officers will actively participate in the sport through an annual competition, with the best performers awarded.
Speaking during the launch, Gift of Chess Director of global outreach Phyllis Ngige said the introduction of the game within correctional facilities will foster growth and skills that will open new opportunities especially for those completing their prison terms.
