STATE DEPARTMENT FOR CORRECTIONAL SERVICES PARTNERS WITH ICRC TO BUILD CAPACITY

By Nicholas Kigondu

The State Department for Correctional Services has partnered with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to build capacity of Kenya Prisons Service staff through targeted trainings.

In the partnership, ICRC will offer tailored training programmes focusing on addressing specific skills gaps through a combination of formal and informal learning touching on mental health, operational maintenance and other security related courses.

ICRC Head of Delegation Marie Dubeau says the project, that has seen the organization donate a starlink kit to the Kenya Prisons Service to help support virtual trainings, is part of ongoing efforts aimed at realizing envisaged reforms targeting the country’s prisons.

While thanking ICRC for its support, Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco said her department remains ready to collaborate with partners and stakeholders towards improving the country’s correctional system.

“ICRC is one of our most valuable partners. You have played a pivotal role in ongoing reforms targeting the country’s correctional system by supporting offender rehabilitation. Your efforts speak to the government agenda. We are grateful for your support and hope to scale up the partnership to extend to probation and aftercare services.” She said.
