Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco has lauded the judiciary for its efforts in enhancing access to justice.

Speaking during the launch of the Dagoretti Law Courts, the PS said expanding the doorways to Justice is of great importancee in the current justice landscape.

“Making justice accessible to all, particularly less privileged communities is a tangible step towards that goal. The launch of this Court today is a testament of reaching out to the community who deserve it.” She observed.

She said the State Department for Correctional Services remains committed in upholding and championing justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration, focusing on both custodial and non-custodial measures.

“We appreciate our partnership with the Judiciary and other key stakeholders to ensure that justice delivery is inclusive, restorative, and upholds public safety. Promoting access to justice, especially for vulnerable groups like women, children, and marginalized communities is paramount.” She said.

According to the PS, establishment of the Dagoretti law courts will bring justice closer to the people and reduce case backlogs besides enhancing collaboration between the judiciary and the state department for correctional services in their quest for timely dispensation of justice, enhanced offender rehabilitation and effective administration of justice.

Speaking at the same forum, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the launch of the new courts is a testament to the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring every Kenyan has access to justice, regardless of their location.

“I urge the national government, county governments, and our development partners to continue supporting the Judiciary as we work to eliminate barriers to justice, including inadequate court infrastructure, in Nairobi City and beyond.” She implored.

According to Solicitor General Shadarack Mose, the court with its proximity to the people, will reduce the cost of seeking justice.

The Dagoretti Law Courts will also house a Small Claims Court, a dedicated Gender Justice Court for sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) cases, and a Magistrates’ Court.
