PS Official Visit to Thika & Kiambu G.K Prison

The PS, Correctional Services Ms Salome M. Beacco did an official visit to the Thika and Kiambu G.K Prison on 20th July 2023. The aim of the visit was to familiarize with the institution’s welfare and look into the challenges the prisons are facing.

In attendance at the visit was the KCB Foundation team, who partner with the State Department and donated a total of 1500 mattresses for inmates and 500 blankets to children accompanying their mothers to prison while at Thika Women Prison in a bid to implement the one prisoner, one bed, one mattress initiative, to help restore dignity and hope to the inmates, promised to.

For smooth reintegration into society, KCB Branch Manager Samuel Nganga stated that the women need to be instilled with information on financial literacy in line with the ‘Tujiajiri Model Empowerment’, for them to be self-reliant and successful people once released.

The PS was pleased and thanked them for their support and encouraged more partnerships.

"When you empower a woman, you empower the whole country,” she said.

While addressing inmates, the PS encouraged them not to despair but continue equipping themselves with the necessary skills needed.

The PS also visited the Kiambu G.K Prison and was impressed by the state of hygiene in the facility and commended them to keep up the good work.

Present during the visit was Royal Paints Managing Director Rumit Gala, who did a donation of 500 liters of paint, along with brushes, solvents and turpentine to help paint the prison.

While addressing the inmates, Ms. Beacco noted that she is working with the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) to help review laws so that the facilities can be more modernized.

While speaking to the Prison Staff, she applauded them for their motivated force and encouraged them to keep up the good work.

“Never underrate what you do, and don't underrate the prisoners, because everybody is a child of the highest," she said.

On the same day, the PS launched a counseling Unit at Kiambu Probation Station and she was welcomed by the Director Probation Christine Obondi.

“Counselling is a vital part of the rehab process and without the intervention, there won't be behavior change," the Director Probation said.

Also in attendance were Commissioner General of Prisons, Brg (Rtd) John K. Warioba, Secretary PACS Ms. Mary Mbau, Director Administration, Jonam Kinama and other senior officials from the State Department.
