By Nicholas Kigondu
The government through the Department of Correctional Services is set to adopt new technologies as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the prisons industry.
Speaking during a tour of the Prisons timber yard kiln seasoning centre located in the city’s Industrial area, Correctional Services PS Dr. Salome Beacco said the plan is part of her reform agenda targeting eight key priority areas.
While affirming the government’s commitment to the reform agenda, the PS said there was a need for the facility to match with modern workshops through upgrading of the current equipment.
“There is a need to conduct a cost-benefit analysis and see whether adopting new technologies would revolutionize the industry”, she observed.
Among the areas of focus according to the PS include enhancing the manufacture of industrial goods, enhancing income generated through the industry, increasing seed capital for the acquisition of raw materials, and enhancing vocational training in appropriate technology and market-oriented products.
She said reducing operational costs through the adoption of innovative technologies would ensure that the industries, renowned for their quality products, compete effectively with private sector players.
“Let us also look at other possible innovative sources of energy in an effort to bring down the cost of power.” She said.
The kiln seasoning center, treats mainly hardwood to acceptable moisture content levels, in a process that takes two weeks with the timber majorly used in the Prisons industry to make high-quality products.
