By Nicholas Kigondu
The State Department for Correctional Services has prioritized digitalization, legal and policy reforms as well as the development of a mental health policy, manual and curriculum in its reform agenda.
Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco says the plan is part of a holistic approach meant to strengthen the integrity, efficiency and accountability of the criminal justice system and enhance access to justice.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and International Development Law Organization (IDL), the PS said the envisaged reforms seek to create more just and equitable outcomes for all.
“I am confident that we will realize the desired outcomes. INL and IDL can plug into the plan that among others intend to automate all correctional system processes through a single solution.” Said the PS.
Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Representative at U.S. Department of State Parvathy Sankar expressed commitment to support the State Department in its reform agenda including capacity building.
According to IDLO Country Director Teresa Mugadza, if realized, the envisaged reforms will enhance efficiency and performance within the country’s correctional system.
The State department has identified digitalization, legal and policy reforms and mental health as key pillars in efforts aimed at enhancing service delivery.
