NEW DAWN AS NAIROBI WEST PRISON ACQUIRES TRIPLE-DECKER BEDS FOR ALL INMATES
By Nicholas Kigondu
The Nairobi West Prison has now joined Mombasa remand prison in ensuring that inmates will no longer be forced to sleep on the floor.
The development follows the provision of a further 93 triple decker beds to the facility as part of the He for HE Triple-Decker bed campaign championed by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco meant to provide 20,000 beds to cater for all male inmates in the country’s correctional facilities.
Speaking at Nairobi West Prison during the handover of the beds, the PS said the initiative will ensure every inmate has a bed, promoting human dignity and aligning with the Nelson Mandela Rules and the UN's Minimum Standard Rules for the Treatment of Offenders.
“It is a human right to live in dignity. We want all inmates across the country’s correctional facilities to live in dignity.” She said.
While supporting the initiative, parliamentary affairs Principal Secretary Aurelia Rono said success of the programme will ensure that no one is left behind beside optimizing space, reaffirming dignity and enhancing overall health of inmates.
The Campaign, led by the department for Correctional Services and supported by well-wishers, seeks to provide a bed for every inmate in the country in a bid to decongest prisons and restore dignity to inmates.
