By Nicholas Kigondu

The State Department for Correctional Services is among government agencies exhibiting at this year’s Africa Public Service Day Celebrations.

Under the theme, Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063, the two-day event was officially opened by Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku.

The celebrations, that kicked off on Monday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, are meant to inspire the push for stronger public service institutions and innovations aimed at scaling up citizen-centric government services.

During the first day of the celebrations, officers from the State Department were on hand to take through members of the public on its core mandate. Members of the public also had a chance to sample some of the products produced by the department including those from the prison farms and enterprises.

Comprising of two technical units, Kenya Prisons Service and probation and Aftercare Service, the State Department oversees the management, rehabilitation, and reintegration of offenders to promote a just and secure society.

The Kenya Prisons Service manages the containment of incarcerated adults and minors while Probation and Aftercare Service deals with offenders serving non-custodial sentences.
