CORRECTIONAL SERVICES PS PUSHES FOR ENHANCED TREE PLANTING AHEAD OF ANTICIPATED EL NINO RAINS

Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco has challenged staff working in the department to take advantage of the anticipated El Niño-enhanced short rains to plant and grow trees.

Speaking during a meeting with Directors drawn from Probation and Aftercare Service, the PS said the move will ensure the department realizes its target of producing seedlings and growing trees in support of the broader national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

She urged regional and County Directors to be ambassadors of the Greening Kenya initiative by collaborating with learning and other public institutions to plant and grow trees with a bias on fruit trees to supplement the nutritional needs among the beneficiaries.

This even as she challenged Probation and Aftercare Service to collaborate with its sister technical department, the Kenya Prisons Service to source for quality seedlings.

The PS has been in the forefront in leading the department in its greening Kenya agenda, dedicating every first Thursday of the month to a nationwide tree-planting initiative across all Kenya's correctional facilities in a programme that has seen at least 7 million trees planted.
